  • SPO Club Presentation

Back to Articles News Back to Sections SPO Club Presentation By Carolina Figueroa and Rachel Ezeadichie Volume 1 Issue 6 March 18, 2021 Image provided by Parents Website The SPO (Student Peer Organization) club, advised by Mrs. Melluso and Mrs. Christiansen, recently presented an educational lesson to the 7th grade. During the event, my classmates and I learned about coping mechanisms and how to control our emotions. As a North student, the balance of school, extra activities (like sports, clubs, etc.), homework and socialization can be stressful, but SPO offered manageable ways to deal with tough emotions. During the lesson, the SPO members taught the 7th grade students how to control and handle our emotions. My favorite activity was modeling the paper. During the lesson, my classmates and I first took a piece of paper and created it into whatever we wanted. I made a paper airplane, but other students created origami, paper snowflakes, folded the paper and so many other ideas. From this first paper activity, I learned that I have control over what the paper comes out as, and it’s the same with feelings. I am in charge of how I act and can only control myself. My emotions reflect on my actions, and if they get out of control, I may say or do things I might regret. Next SPO instructed my class to again design another paper project. After creating our first paper project, we used the same piece of paper and constructed something different. This time I folded my paper and created a bracelet while my classmates though of other ideas like shapes and more. SPO taught me with the second paper experiment that you can adjust the outcome of different situations This shows that with our feelings and emotions, they affect the outcome of a situation, but we can also adjust the issue if it takes an unexpected turn. In the past, I have tried different ways to deal with my emotions. A majority of those methods were good, but they didn’t work for me. SPO gave me a new way to think about the methods I used to work with my emotions. Figuring out and sorting the feelings and situations I can and cannot control made me think about how I used my emotions and how I reacted to them. When I sat down and thought about it, I realized that there are many emotions I can control and some that I can’t. I even did the activities that SPO taught us again, so that I could really reflect. When I was done, I felt a little better about my life because I knew more about myself than I did before. I would recommend that you sit down and think about how you have controlled your emotions in the past. It could help you figure out if you may need to change something in your life that you didn’t realize you had control over. It could also help you realize that you might need to stop trying to change something that you have no control over. Either way, thinking about your emotions and situations can help you better yourself. You can even use the activities specified in the second paragraph to do so! The SPO presentation really helped me progress in dealing with my emotions, and I feel that I learned great ways to help with coping and managing my feelings. I’m really looking forward to writing about SPO’s 2nd lesson! BACK TO TOP

  • EA's FIFA

Back to Articles Entertainment & Media Back to Sections EA's FIFA By Habib Rattani Volume 1 Issue 4 January 20, 2021 Image provided by Play Station EA Sports produces FIFA every year around the end of each year. The game is usually a hit or miss, and the quality of the game has decreased by a lot over the last few years. The last game they made which was considered fun was FIFA 17. Since then, the creators have gotten lazy due to lack of competition and they don’t seem to add anything new to the game knowing fans will still purchase it. I grew up playing soccer, so I drifted towards liking this game. FIFA used to be so much fun and such a good game, but the last few years it just brings annoyance and disappointment due to the lack of creativity. Some of the pros of the product are that it looks very realistic and produces a real feel as if you're in the game. There is one game mode called Ultimate Team which brings in most of the revenue and attention. It's a game mode where you can build your best team, based on the chemistry involved, and play with legends from the past as well as compete online for prizes. The game has turned from a pleasurable experience to the game becoming lackluster. Some cons are how the game doesn't seem like a game anymore and nothing new is ever added due to no competition. Some of the best examples for the game could be FORTNITE and NBA2k. All these games are similar in the idea that they have no competition, so creators don't add much of anything new; they have certain game modes that bring in the most revenue. All these games are very popular, but more effort could be put into any of them instead of just updating players and selling the new year’s version. I often reminisce about how good it used to be and how many memories I created from it. The game has become too dull and I don’t enjoy it as much anymore. Due to the reputation of the brand, players continue to buy the game due to promises being made by the company which go unfulfilled. Many others seem to agree with me on this topic. Other players feel like EA could make the game so much better if they put the effort in and they could make something very special. I used to love playing FIFA, but now I gravitate away from it due to the rage it causes. There are many issues and broken glitches in the game which makes it so annoying to play. If the company put in effort, the outcome could be so different. FIFA used to serve as my favorite game. I used to watch YouTube, talk about it, and play it. All in all, I loved FIFA. The game used to bring so much joy, even when I got angry with the experiences it brought playing against my friends, which are unforgettable. However, recently my opinion has switched, and my current favorite game is NBA2k. It brings around the same experience, but the competitive anger I feel is a fun type of excitement. The game isn't very good, but it is fun to play and reminds me of the experiences FIFA brought. I would recommend this game, but the servers are not the greatest. Quite honestly, they are horrible, but at this point anything is better than FIFA. FIFA could produce a masterclass in sporting games if they put in the time and effort. BACK TO TOP

  • The Amazing Kayla Santo

Back to Articles Sports Back to Sections The Amazing Kayla Santo By John McCarthy Volume 1 Issue 5 February 12, 2021 Original photo by Kayla Santo Today, we are featuring one of the most incredible athletes at North and beyond, Kayla Santo. She is a three-sport varsity athlete, and has played sports all of her years at VS North. Not only is she a three-sport varsity athlete, she has been a varsity athlete for four years already, and she’s only in 10th grade. Many athletes only start playing varsity sports in 10th or 11th grade. For Kayla, she played Varsity Softball in 7th grade: he only one to do so, ever. Moreover, her talent at an early age doesn’t stop at softball; she started playing Varsity Girls Volleyball and Varsity Girls Basketball in 8th grade. In a virtual interview with the amazing Kayla Santo, she gave inspiring answers to my questions. Here were her responses: Q: How do you balance your schoolwork with practices and games? A: “In the past I’ve learned to make a schedule to help me get through the day with less stress. My normal routine that I follow now is I do my homework right after school and try to get it all done, then I will go to practice or my games and if I don’t finish my homework before I have to leave I will finish it before I go to bed.” Q: From what I understand, you played Varsity Softball in just 7th grade. How did playing with older students make you feel, and how do you think it has affected your athletics later on? A: “At first I was really nervous and excited because it was a whole new experience with people I’ve never met before, but as the season went on I became super close with them and created great friendships. Playing with the seniors especially has taught me a lot. I believe playing with them made me stronger mentally and physically because they always pushed me to be my best as well as learning to understand and trust new people that I’ve never played with.” Q: How much of your personality do you think can be explained by sports? A: “I believe a lot of my personality contributes to sports. With my team in practices I would definitely say I’m very energetic (even in the mornings) and I absolutely love to hype my team up. When it comes to game time I get really competitive mostly because I am kind of a sore loser but I think that benefits me and helps me get through the game strong.” Q: Is there any advice you would like to give our young athletes at North? A: “For anyone who wants to branch out and try new sports, now is definitely the time to do so. Playing another sport or a new hobby can teach you so many interesting things that you never knew and can really bring a light into your life.” Q: Finally, favorite sport? A: “I would say my favorite sport is definitely softball. I’ve played softball since I was 6 and It has shaped me into the person that I am today. I wouldn’t give it up even if I was offered $1,000,000.” As you can tell from her answers, Kayla is a dedicated student-athlete and has great passion for all the sports she plays. A true inspiration for young athletes looking to defy the odds, only a sophomore, Kayla still has much left in her sporting career. Whether it is on the court or outside on the field, she will continue to do amazing things. Go Spartans! BACK TO TOP
